Maryland State Police Aviation: Trooper 5

Trooper 5 is the primary helicopter serving the counties of Garrett, Allegany and Washington in Maryland, several counties in West Virginia and southwestern counties in Pennsylvania. Trooper 5 flies in some of the most mountainous and rural areas of the state. Based at the Greater Cumberland Regional Airport in Wiley Ford, West Virginia, Trooper 5 is the only Maryland State Police unit that is permanently stationed outside of Maryland. The Cumberland Section responds to its missions in the most challenging area for pilots and paramedics. Rugged terrain and rapidly changing weather (with limited reporting) challenge our pilots. Our state trooper / flight paramedics often operate in austere environments - sometimes being the only advanced life support providers (and occasionally the only emergency medical services providers) on the scene. Trooper 5 routinely flies long flight legs due to the distance from the scene to the hospital.
